Auditions for Harrison, Texas: Three One Acts by Horton Foote
The second studio show this session highlights the work of Horton Foote, academy award winning author of the screenplay for To Kill A Mockingbird.
All three short plays are set in the fictional town of Harrison, Texas.
We begin with the comic “Blind Date,” in which the blunt and truculent Sarah Nancy must endure her genteel Aunt Dolores’ determined efforts to get her married off as her bemused Uncle Robert watches while craving a dinner his wife has been too busy to cook. Next is “The One-Armed Man,” which packs a great deal of observation about class and economic disparities into its 15 minutes as it details the story of McHenry, a cotton-gin worker who lost an arm in an accident on the job and wants his ex-boss, C.W. Rowe, to restore it.
“The Dancers” tells the story of a high school graduate going to his first dance with a girl before he heads off to college.
The show movingly conveys the joys and woes of average lives in the titular Texas small town. “Harrison, TX” is definite proof of that old adage that good things can come in small packages.-Variety
