Synopsis

A hit on Broadway, A Year with Frog and Toad was nominated for three Tony Awards

– including Best Musical. Based on Arnold Lobel’s well-loved books, and featuring a

hummable score by Robert and Willie Reale, this whimsical show follows two great

friends – the cheerful, popular Frog and the rather grumpy Toad – through four fun-

filled seasons. Waking from hibernation in the Spring, Frog and Toad plant gardens, swim, rake

leaves, go sledding and learn life lessons along the way. The two best friends

celebrate and rejoice in the differences that make them unique and special. Part

vaudeville, part make believe… all charm, A Year with Frog and Toad tells the story of

a friendship that endures throughout the seasons.

ROLES AVAILABLE:

Note: We are gender blind casting this show. Any child may try out for any role they feel drawn to!

Frog (10-14 years old)

Frog is a friendly, confidant, positive and caring character. This leading role requires a strong actor and singer. They should always seem comfortable helping solve Toad’s problems and reacting to Toad’s traumas.

Toad (10-14 years old)

Toad is serious, irritable, self-conscious yet an oddly charismatic and loveable character. This leading role requires a strong actor and singer. The friendship that they share with Frog must appear loyal through and through.

Snail (10-14 years old)

Snail is simply unflappable. They will deliver without fail “in the rain or sleet or snow.” They should be able to deliver their songs with personality, confidence and musical accuracy. They have few spoken lines, but their singing entrances are the comedic relief of the show.

Bird 1 (10-14 years old)

Bird 2 (10-14 years old)

Bird 3 (10-14 years old)

The Birds communicate the passage of time (seasons) and set the stage for the story to follow. They must be good singers and feel comfortable singing in harmony. They are sassy, loud and vibrant characters with a mischievous streak. Dance experience is preferred.

Turtle/Mole/Squirrel (8-14 years old)

Mouse/Mole/Squirrel (8-14 years old)

Lizard/Mole/Squirrel (8-14 years old)

For these roles we are looking for strong actors and dancers that are comfortable embodying several different animals. They will be featured in the two ballet sequences as well as have solo lines of dialogue and music. Having experience singing harmonies is a plus.

Young Frog (6-10 years old)

We are looking for a young actor that is confident singing and acting by themselves on stage.

Mother Frog/Swing (10-14 years old)

Father Frog/Swing (10-14 years old)

We are looking for two well-rounded actors/singers/dancers that will be able to learn all the roles in the show and be able to cover for other characters during rehearsals or performances as needed. They will also play Mother and Father Frog and have solo lines of dialogue and song. This is a demanding position, but very rewarding in experience.
